It’s still more than a year away, but at its Oct. 26 open house at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, officials with the Oregon Department of Transportation displayed plans for repaving of Interstate 84 from Rowena to Hood River.
The $7 million project is expected to go to bid next fall, with actual construction expected to start in the spring of 2018. Officially, the project will stretch from MP 64.4 just east of the interstate bridge in Hood River through MP 76.5 near Rowena.
“The existing roadway is showing signs of significant rutting and raveling,” read an excerpt from an ODOT informational sheet describing the project. The project will include storm drainage enhancements to alleviate the highway’s problems with standing water in places.
The Rowena to Mosier part of the highway in line for repaving in 2018 has not been repaved since 2001, while the Hood River to Mosier section has not been done since 2004.
According to ODOT representatives, the paving of the “slow lanes” and the outside shoulders of I-84 will be performed at night while traffic is restricted to the fast lanes and median shoulders. Later, the fast lanes will be repaved with traffic shifted onto the slow lanes. Storm drainage work will be going on while the repaving work is in process.
“Minimal traffic delays are expected as a result of the slower travel speeds through the project,” read ODOT information sheet.
