Thursday, during lunch, there will be a car accident in front of The Dalles High School.
EMTs will arrive and then a Life Flight helicopter will land on Amaton Field.
Do not be alarmed. It’s all just an act.
The simulation will be part of the Every 15 Minutes program, which TDHS does every other year around the time of prom to remind its students not to drink and drive.
The program will begin Thursday morning when every 15 minutes a volunteer junior or senior will be taken out of his or her classroom by another student portraying the grim reaper.
The student will return to class wearing makeup and a black robe to signify their demise. The ‘dead’ students will have their cell phones taken away and will not communicate with anyone for the rest of the day until the group meets for an overnight stay at Brooks Memorial State Park in Goldendale, Wash. The students will then return to school Friday for an assembly, where the entire junior and senior classes will discuss what happened the day before. Law enforcement will be in attendance to share information and experiences they’ve had. Parents will also speak.
“They all know that this is something that you’re not supposed to do, text and drive, drink and drive, get in the car with someone who has been drinking, they all know that, but I think the more opportunities that we can provide and open up those conversations with kids, the better,” Every 15 Minutes coordinator at TDHS Robin Johnson said.
The Every 15 Minutes program takes place in high schools all over North America.
