The Oregon State Police bomb squad was called to an address in the 2500 block of East 12th Street Friday night on a suspected explosive device, which turned out to be fake, police said.
The Dalles Police Capt. Jamie Carrico said the “homemade destruction device” was found by the OSP bomb squad from Pendleton to be “not flammable or a danger to anybody.”
Police were called to the address at about 8:30 p.m. “because a person was on the front porch with a handgun in their hand and the family was trying to de-escalate the situation and it was determined he was depressed over the death of a family member,” Carrico said.
A mental health counselor happened to be on a police ride-along that night and was able to get the man to agree to go to the hospital for an evaluation, Carrico said.
When police arrived at the scene, the man complied with police commands, he said.
A family member alerted police to a device “that appeared to have been a homemade destruction device,” Carrico said. The bomb squad was called, and a robot was utilized to examine it.
Police believe the device was made by the man who was the subject of the call.
Meanwhile, officers asked immediate neighbors to stay in their house during the situation. Police were on scene for three hours, Carrico said.
He said the department has occasion to call the OSP bomb squad about once a year on average.
The Wasco County Sheriff’s Office also assisted the city police on the call, Carrico said.
