HRV’s boys and girls golf program may have a young roster, but it’s an expanding one — at nearly 20 golfers, the team is twice the size in 2015 as it was 2014.
“This is a rebuilding year for our golf program, but I am very encouraged by the number of kids who have decided to come out,” reported Mark Gradin, second-year coach for HRV, as well as the director of player development for Indian Creek Golf Course in Hood River.
The girls team boasts seven freshman, all of whom are playing golf for the first time, said Gradin. Amy Webber, Ruby Patterson, Carly Wyatt, and Sara Hamada all traveled to The Dalles last week on Tuesday to play for HRV in an all-levels tournament. Gradin said Webber had the best score with a 137.
On the boys side, Gradin said 12 have turned out to play, seven of whom are freshman, enough for both a varsity and JV team. On Friday, the team traveled to The Dalles Invitational where 13 schools participated. Dan Kuechmann, a returning senior who qualified for state last year, shot the team’s best score at 79. Also representing the Eagles were juniors Victor Flores, Edgar Castillo, Austin Marques, and freshman Colson Zack, all of whom Gradin said “are playing competitive golf for the first time.”
The Eagles will return to the links Wednesday, April 1, when both the boys and the girls teams will host The Dalles-Wahtonka at Indian Creek Golf Course at 9 a.m.
