THE DALLES — The Dalles High School boys basketball team fell at home to Madras in a 4A Tri-Valley Conference league contest, 63-56, on Jan. 23 in Kurtz Gymnasium.
The Riverhawks (8-9) grabbed momentum from the White Buffaloes (13-3) in the first half, leading 15-13 at the end of the first quarter and 28-27 at halftime.
The Dalles continued their lead into the second half, leading 46-45 at the end of the third quarter. However, Madras came back in the fourth quarter, grabbing the lead for good early in the period on a Dre Plazola basket.
Oliver Stevens made one of two free throws with 2:37 to play to pull The Dalles within 54-53. But Jamos Riddle found Plazola open inside the Riverhawk zone to start a 6-0 Madras scoring run. Stevens made a three-point play with 70 seconds left to stop the spurt, but those proved to be the last points for the Riverhawks. Madras went 3-for-4 from the foul line to seal the win in the final 28 seconds.
Stevens led the Riverhawks in nearly all categories with 23 points, six rebounds, five steals, three assists, and three deflections. Senior Derek Goulart got back on the floor for his first game in four weeks. He put up 12 points, three rebounds, an assist, a steal and two deflections.
Next up, The Dalles will battle the Gladstone High School Gladiators (5-13) at 7 p.m. on Jan. 27 at Gladstone High School.
