The Dalles High Riverhawks boys and girls golf teams are both winding down toward the conclusion of their season, and they competed in the OSAA Class 4A/3A/2A/1A regional tournament on April 30 at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks.
Both squads were hoping to shoot low scores to help them qualify for the state tournament May 13-14. The Riverhawk girls squad played in the six-team district preview event April 30 and senior Katelyn Vassar highlighted the event for The Dalles. Vassar took third place individually out of 23 golfers, while shooting a 96. The golfers played the front nine holes in rain, wind, and hail.
Coach Nate Timmons said: “I feel pretty optimistic that Katelyn will shoot a low enough score to qualify for state. I’m guessing that Katelyn will probably have to shoot a score in the low 90s to qualify and she’ll have to play very well, but I think she’ll make it.”
Freshman Kailee Klindt shot a personal-best score of 117 and junior Madison Grant shot a 141.
“It was awesome seeing Kailee shoot a personal-best score,” said Timmons. “Madi struggled a little bit, but she’s getting her swing straightened out.”
The Riverhawk boys squad of junior Gabe Hoff, senior Connor Sam, sophomore Leighton Voodre, and senior Logan Baumgarten will compete in the regional. The top-five players will advance to the state tournament. The boys event is at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell; the girls tourney is at Tokatee Gold Course in McKenzie.
