The Dalles boys cross country
Noah Noteboom photo/fileThe Dalles High School’s boys and girls cross country teams solidified their spots among the Class 4A’s best teams Saturday with their performances at the annual Paul Mariman Invitational in Philomath.
The Riverhawk boys were second and the girls third in the meet. Newport, the top ranked 4A boys team, won the boys race with 38 points while The Dalles (ranked fifth) was second with 66.
The Riverhawks, last year’s state champion, were led by sophomore Tyson Long, who was fourth in 17 minutes, 36 seconds for 5,000 meters. Junior Caleb Caldwell ran a season best and placed 15th (18:27). The other scoring runners (top five) for The Dalles were: Egan Ziegenhagen in 17th, Aiden Erickson in 18th; and Gabriel Castillo Quintana in 25th.
Two The Dalles girls runners recorded season bests: sophomore Abigail Pope was 15th in 22:45 and freshman Riley Elliott was 35th in 24:41. Alaina Casady led Coach Jill Bell’s team with her third-place finish in 20:38. Ruby Jaimes Mora was 23rd (23:41) and Laura Black 28th (23:57) for The Dalles’ other team scoring places.
