An introductory class for beginning pickleball will be held on Sunday, Feb. 21 at the May Street School gym from 12-1 p.m., sponsored by Community Ed. This class is designed for all who have heard about pickleball, wonder what it is, and are interested in learning the game. Nancy Clement and Elizabeth Whelan, founding members of the Gorge Pickleball Association in Hood River, will be at the gym that day to go over the basic fundamentals and rules of the game. Students should wear comfortable sport clothing and tennis shoes. Paddles, balls, and nets will be provided. “I get emails from people who are curious about the game, but want to know more about it before signing up for a full session,” explains Clement about the reason for holding the class. “This is the perfect opportunity.” For further information call Community Ed. at 541-386-2055.
Nordic team preparing for state
The HRV Nordic ski team is fine-tuning in preparation for the state championship coming up Feb. 27-28 at Mt. Bachelor. Nordic correspondent Finn Peterson reports that the team had a fun time this weekend at a Mt. Hood Meadows 5K, 7K, and 20K skate race, competing against both high school and adult racers. “With state just around the corner, athletes are anxious to put their speed to the test,” he said. “A special thanks from the HRV Nordic team goes out to the staff at Meadows Nordic Center for their hard work and passion with organizing races.”
Varsity wrestlers crush The Dalles in dual meet
The HRV varsity wrestling team has a secure hold on the River Clash Cup for another season as the Eagles dominated The Dalles in a dual meet Thursday, defeating the Riverhawks 73-6, and winning all but one of its matches. Winning by fall were Noah Wachsmuth, Dylan Peterson, Trystan Fisher, and Mark Reyes. Jason Shaner won by a 19-4 technical fall. Ryan Zeller and Cade Parker won their matches in major decisions, with results of 10-0 and 11-3, respectively. Justin Lane, Tristan Keely, Junior Manzo, Nathaniel Quintanilla, Oscar Villegas, and Justin Wilson all won their matches by forfeit. This Friday and Saturday, the team heads to Mountain View for the Special District 4 championships.
Local students place at state middle school wrestling championships in Hood River
Hood River Middle School’s Emily Sullenger stood atop the podium this weekend at the Oregon Girls Middle School Wrestling Championships held Saturday at Hood River Valley High School, where Sullenger placed first in the 82-pound weight class. Also placing for HRMS was Madelynn Trujillo, who took third in the 117-pound weight class.
