THE GORGE — Many of the Gorge’s Class 1A schools competed at the 10-team Howard Kreps Bruin Invite on April 10 at Columbia High in White Salmon.
The Dufur and Trout Lake girls teams gave an indicator of what might be a very competitive District 3-1A meet in mid-May based on their performances. The Rangers and Mustangs tied for third place behind larger schools Columbia and Stevenson.
The two smaller schools went head-to-head in the relays, with Trout Lake winning both events and Dufur finishing second in the 4x100 meter race and third (behind Columbia) in the 4x400. Trout Lake’s Lisa and Lupe Medina, Jade Mclean, and Cora Sharp teamed up to win the short relay in 53.27 seconds to Dufur’s 53.86. Running for the Rangers were Hailee Pechanec, Jacey Calloway, Lily Egeland, and Ellie Brock.
The Mustang 4x400 relay won in 4:19.54 and included Riley Rickman, Melody Stock, Mclean, and Sharp. Dufur ran 4:28.62 and legs came from Brock, Calloway, Egeland, and Ruby Wilson.
Calloway added a personal best 49.62 clocking to win the 300 hurdles; Pechanec won the shot put and discus; and Brock won the 800 (2:35.23 personal best).
For Trout Lake, Sharp was second in the 100 and won the long jump (16 feet, 8.75 inches); Aurora Zoller was second in both the shot put and discus; and Stock won the 1600 meters in 5:20.39.
Also of note in the girls competition, Glenwood’s Kerryna Thompson won the javelin, and teammate Giana Jackson was second in the long jump (15-2.5).
On the boys side, Jayden Kuskey won the shot put (49-7.5) and the discus in a personal best 143-4. Sherman County’s Renan Christiansen was second in the shot at 46-11.
Lyle-Wishram’s Ezekiel Marble won the high hurdles, ran a personal best in the 200, and ran a leg on the Cougars’ third-place 4x100 relay.
Dufur and Glenwood battled in the meet’s final event, the boys 4x400 relay, with the Rangers winning 3:52.02 to 3:52.42 — the top two times in District 3 thus far. Glenwood had individual wins from distance runners Anthony Avila (1,600) and Ciaran McCabe (800). South Wasco County was led by senior Jason Hull’s runner-up finishes in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.
Horizon Christian competed April 11 at the 16-team Lower Columbia Invitational meet in St. Helens. The Hawks were led by sophomore Charlie Haynie’s double win in the hurdles. He won the 110s in 15.52 seconds and the 300s in a school record 41.29.
Sophomore teammate John Tu ran his first open 400 and clocked a respectable 56.48. Senior Landon Whitaker was third in the long jump at 19-2.5; sophomore Judah Garret was third in the javelin at 144-5; and sophomore Josh Carley ran a personal best 9:48.15 in the 3,000.
