The two local OSAA Special District 7 Class 1A baseball teams struggled last week as both Sherman/Condon/Weeler High and Dufur were mired in losing streaks.
The Huskies (3-3 SD7, 6-8 overall) lost a nonleague road contest 7-2 to the Class 2A Culver High Bulldogs (3-3 SD3, 8-5 overall) on April 16. The Huskies built a 2-0 first inning lead, highlighted by a two RBI triple by senior Zander Berglund (1-for-2). The Bulldogs capitalized on Husky errors to take the lead for good in the second inning.
The Huskies had three hits, singles by junior Leven Whitbeck (1-for-1, walk), and senior Talon Dark (1-for-3).
The Huskies lost a doubleheader to the Pendleton High Buckaroo junior varsity squad on April 18 at Wheeler High School in Fossil. Pendleton won the first game 15-1, followed by a Game 2, 11-0, win for a sweep, extending the Huskies’ losing streak to six. Both games were shortened to five innings via the 10-run mercy rule.
The Huskies were scheduled to play April 23 at Stanfield/Echo (3-3 SD7, 7-9 overall) and then host the Cougars Friday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Moro.
Dufur loses three games
The Rangers (0-9 SD7, 1-12 overall) lost a three-game series to the Irrigon High Knights (6-3 SD7, 9-4 overall) last week, extending their losing streak to 10.
Dufur lost 12-8 at home to Irrigon April 16. The Knights then swept the Rangers in a doubleheader, 16-1 and 11-4, on April 20 in Irrigon.
The Rangers were seeking to snap their losing streak on April 23 at the Heppner/Ione High Mustangs (6-0 SD7, 11-4 overall). The Rangers play an 11 a.m. home doubleheader Friday versus the Mustangs at Dufur City Park.
