Snowboard team making great strides
The HRV snowboard team placed second of four teams last week, indicating great improvement as riders get more competitions under their belt. In banked slalom, Elexis McAllister got first place in both banked slalom (BS) and bordercross (BX) and took the BS with a time of 31.44 seconds. Assistant Coach Christy Field said that McAllister was also doing the USASA halfpipe competition during breaks and placed first in her age group, as well as already qualifying for nationals in BX. Aleah Vaday was next for the girls, placing ninth with a time of 48.34. For the boys, Edgar Castillo placed sixth in BS with a time of 30.49, followed by Andy Schmidt (15th, 31.97), Gabe Cunningham (16th, 32.38), Santana Flores (19th, 33.07), Thomas Foley (33rd, 35.05), and Niels Rasmussen (40th, 44.82). Field said that eight of the team’s 12 riders attended the competition and that “the progress over the last couple years with these riders has been incredible. Last year, some of our riders had never competed.” The team’s next event is this Sunday, where riders will compete in a halfpipe competition. Field added that the team has been searching for funding this past week: a $150 donation gets a sponsor’s business logo on the team’s banner that is displayed at competitions.
