RJ ChavezAfter a dominating 17-3 road victory over Wilson on April 3 to open the month, the HRV girls lacrosse team was at home three days later against Westview on April 6.
In the girls’ fifth game of the season, HRV beat Westview by a final score of 19-9.
Early on, the Eagles jumped to a five-score lead.
Throughout the first half, Westview would threaten to come back multiple times as they cut HRV’s lead down to as many as three scores.
But in the second half, HRV would pick up their play on both sides of the field and come away with a comfortable 10-point victory over Westview.
Of the 19 HRV goals, Abigail Bartles and Kathryn Koenig combined for 12.
Bartles and Koenig led the Eagles in scoring with six goals each; Bartles shot 6-9, while Koenig was 6-7.
Behind the top-two scorers for the Eagles was Emma Norris, who scored four goals on 4-5 shooting.
Other scorers for HRV: Tori Hopkins (1); Katherine McElderry (1); and Lauren Orr (1).
Along with the team-high six goals, Bartles also led the Eagles in assists with five versus Westview.
Eight other assists were by five different HRV athletes: Koenig (2); Norris (2); Orr (2); Josie Petersen (1); and Lauren Trumbull (1).
For the third time this season, the Eagles defense forced double-digit turnovers, a total of 11 caused turnovers versus Westview.
On the season, the Eagles’ defense has caused a total of 49 turnovers, an average of nearly 10 a game.
In the goal for HRV versus Westview was Ella Rand. Rand had a save percentage of just under 50 percent as she allowed nine goals on 17 Westview shot attempts; she totaled eight saves.
Through the first five-games of the season, the Eagles have outscored their opponents 77-30.
At the start of this season, the Eagles have stood out as a defensive bunch, only allowing one double-digit scoring game through its first five competitions; that game coming against Lakeridge in the second game of the season, 15-10 HRV.
Even more impressive by this defensive group is that in three of the first five games the girls have held opponents to under five points.
The girls have back-to-back road games this week, starting with Lincoln on Tuesday, April 10 (results unavailable at press time) and Cleveland on Thursday, April 12.
HRV’s next home game is against Oregon Episcopal School (OES) on April 17.
