HRV BOYS TENNIS got a decisive victory over Pendleton Wednesday in the team’s league home debut, defeating the Bucks 6-2. Above, Hugo Sandoval returns a volley during the No. 2 doubles match.
The HRV boys tennis team played Pendleton on Wednesday and the Eagles picked up their second league win of the season, beating a shorthanded Buckaroos squad 6-2.
Pendleton had trouble fielding complete teams last year and has had the same struggles this year, forfeiting the No. 4 matches of both doubles and singles competition, but HRV still won in the matches that were played.
At No. 3 singles, Alden Sova was the lone victor for HRV, sweeping both sets of the match. Will Ferrick and Cole Shepherd lost both sets of their No. 1 and No. 2 matches, respectively, by scores of 6-4.
In doubles matches, HRV swept the competition. In the No. 1 slot, Patrick Humann and Sawyer Bogard won their match 6-2, 6-4. In the No. 2 slot, Hugo Sandoval and Arthur Finstad won their match 6-1, 6-0. The duo of Simon Harsanyi and Luke Harter closed the match out nicely for HRV, sweeping the No. 3 match.
“We played well,” said HRV Head Coach Jon Hiatt. “I was excited to see our No. 2 and No. 3 doubles play solid and win easily. They have really improved this season.”
Following Wednesday’s match, the Eagles play three matches in four days. On Friday, the team was scheduled to host Benson Polytechnic (results not available at press time) and then travel to Oregon Episcopal School and Saturday and Pendleton on Monday.
Girls
The girls team also have been busy this past week, playing three matches in a span of six days.
Hermiston 5, HRV 3
The Eagles were originally supposed to host Hermiston April 14, but spring rains bumped that match to April 15. Hermiston proved to be a tough team, defeating HRV 5-3 and making the Eagles work hard for the matches they did win.
In No. 1 singles, Montsie Garrido won in a match that went to three sets. She went up 6-3 in the first set, dropped the second set 2-6 and then won 10-4 in the closer. Kirby Joseph won a tight first set of the No. 2 match 7-5 and then closed out strong with a set she won 6-1. Bianca Badillo won in the No. 3 match 6-3, 6-4. Nikki Paulus lost in the No. 2 match 2-6, 3-6.
The Bulldogs swept every doubles match and took every game in the No. 1 match that featured Camaryn Chambers and Tia Semmes for HRV. At No. 2, the Flores sisters (Crystal and America) lost both their sets 2-6. In the No. 3 match, Kayla Green and Claire Oswald lost 4-6, 1-6 and the duo of Jordan Zeigner and Ruby Dosier lost both their sets 4-6 in the No. 4 match.
HRV 6, Columbia 0
The Eagles got back on their feet Monday with a nonleague sweep of the Columbia Bruins. Garrido and Olivia Newcomb took both sets of the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, respectively, by scores of 6-4. Zeigner won 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 3 match.
In doubles, Chambers and Semmes won 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 position and the Flores sisters took both sets at No. 2 by a score of 6-1. Badillo and Joseph didn’t lose a game in No. 3 doubles.
HRV 7, Pendleton 1
On Wednesday, HRV swept the season series with Pendleton after defeating the Bucks for the second time this season and nearly swept the road match.
In No. 2 singles, Garrido won 6-2, 6-0 and Joseph won the No. 3 match 6-4, 6-0. Zeigner swept both sets of the No. 4 match. At No. 1, Newcomb dropped both sets (3-6, 2-6).
The Eagles took every match and nearly every set of doubles play. The pairs of Semmes/Chambers (No. 1) and Flores/Flores (No. 2) won both sets of their matches 6-3 and the duo of Badillo/Vanessa Olivas won 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 3 match. In the final match of the day, Green and Oswald took the first set 6-2, but then lost in the second set 4-6. The two finished strong, sweeping the final set.
