The Horizon Christian Boys Basketball team had a great home showing last weekend, with back-to-back victories over Echo on Friday (64-32) and Arlington on Saturday (49-34).
The Hawks were out in full force in the Echo game, with all but one player contributing to the overall score. They shot just under 50 percent from the field including three, racked up 29 rebounds and stole the ball 19 times. It was all too much for Echo, and the score shows as much. Top scorers for the Hawks were Caleb Lingel with 15, Derek Johnston with 12 and Alex Petshow with 10.
“It was a good game,” said coach Darrin Lingel. “We played like we should have, got a lot of players playing time which was good for them.”
The Arlington game was a bit slower paced, but nonetheless, a display of dominance by Horizon on both ends of the court. Arlington brought a solid defense against the Hawks and was able to force longer possessions but unfortunately for them those possessions still yielded points. Horizon shot an even 50 percent from the field including three, and despite the below-average score displayed the usual characteristics of their signature diverse and effective offense.
“I thought we did great; we picked our moments well and hit shots from the outside,” said Lingel. “The kids did a great job passing the ball and finding gaps in the defense.”
Petshow, Johnston and Bailey Holste led the scoring for Horizon in the Arlington game, contributing 12, 11 and 10, respectively. Additional points were scored by Caleb Lingel with nine, Kyle Brown with five and Alex Whitaker with two.
The Hawks will have faced Sherman on Tuesday, a long-awaited matchup of the two undefeated teams in the Big Sky Conference. They are hosting Dufur on Friday and then Sherman next Wednesday.
