The March 13 opener was a matchup between 2023 Class 4A baseball state playoff teams. The host Huskies took a 1-0 first inning lead and the Riverhawks knotted it 1-1 in the fourth. The Huskies scored two in the fifth before the Riverhawks regained the advantage at 4-3 in the sixth inning.
The seesaw battle continued with North Marion scoring in the bottom half of the inning and then again in the bottom of the seventh to get the victory.
Both teams had five hits. The Dalles was led offensively by junior Avery Schwartz (2-for-2, two RBI), senior Cooper Klindt (1-for-2, RBI) and junior Cody Agidius (RBI). Schwartz (10 strikeouts), the Riverhawks starting pitcher, allowed three walks in five innings pitched.
The Riverhawks had late-inning heroics in their second game March 15 at Quinton Street Ballpark in The Dalles. The Riverhawks built a 3-0 lead after three innings, but the visiting Loggers scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. Shaver then delivered a game-winning hit to drive in the winning run in the eighth inning.
The Riverhawks’ eight-hit attack was led by Shaver (1-for-3, RBI), Luciano Alvarado (2-for-3, RBI), Finley Corbin (2-for-4, RBI) and Schwartz (RBI). The trio of pitchers Shaver (two strikeouts), Klindt (three strikeouts) and Will Booth (nine strikeouts) combined to toss a one-hitter.
