Flora Martin Gibson photoTHE DALLES — A young The Dalles High softball team advanced to the 2025 OSAA Class 4A state playoffs this week, set to play a first-round game at 5 p.m. on May 27 at Astoria High School.
The third-ranked Fishermen finished in second place in the Cowapa League behind top-ranked St. Helens with a 19-5 overall record, 9-3 in conference. Astoria and The Dalles played this season on April 11 in Astoria, where the Fishermen won, 2-1.
The Dalles (13-11, 11-4 Tri-Valley Conference) had an innocuous start to its 2025 season, losing eight straight games after winning its opener, 20-5, over North Marion. First-year head Coach Duane Witter and his staff helped guide the Riverhawks through their runner-up conference finish (behind 14-1 Gladstone) with one senior, captain Maddie Brock. Her leadership — including three prior varsity seasons on teams averaging 21 wins — also was key to the team’s development.
The Dalles finished Tri-Valley play with an 11-0 win over Molalla on May 16 followed by a, 3-2, non-league win May 22 at 5A Dalles. The Dragons are ranked No. 4 in Class 5A.
