THE DALLES — The Columbia Gorge Hustlers 18U American Legion baseball team went 4-1 last week, losing 3-0 to Hillsboro’s Baseballism Wet Sox on June 29, routing Pendleton’s Eastern Oregon Baseball Club (EOBC) 17U team 11-5 and 14-4 on July 1, and beating Salem’s Vencer Scout 18U, 4-3 and 4-2, on July 2.
The Hustlers (16-6), led by Coach Pat Clark, struggled to get the bats going against the Wet Sox (15-7), finishing with four hits in the loss.
Two days later, the Hustlers rebounded against EOBC (7-10) in Pendleton. In game one, the Hustlers rattled off 13 hits, led by Hood River’s Trevor Jacobs, who went 4-5 from the plate with two RBI and two runs scored.
In game two, the Hustlers were great from the plate again, finishing with 11 hits to EOBC’s four. Multiple players hit well: The Dalles’ Gunner Bustos went 2-3 from the plate with 3 RBI and a run scored; Hood River’s Elliott Dillingham went 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored; and Dufur’s Chase Peterson went 2-3 with two runs scored.
On the mound, Peterson struck out five batters through four innings pitched and gave up two hits. The Dalles’ Sawyer Case stepped in for Peterson, pitching one inning with a strikeout to help close out the win.
Things were much closer against Vencer Scout (5-11-2) a day later. In game one, Ortega pitched four innings with two strikeouts and gave up three runs. Hood River’s Landen Pratt stepped in for Ortega for two innings, striking out five to close the door.
In game two, Bustos got the start on the mound, striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Jacobs pitched the final inning with two strikeouts to help seal the deal.
The Hustlers play a doubleheader at the Corvallis Marketmen on July 6, host EOBC for a two-game set on July 7 in The Dalles, play at West Linn Legion 16U on July 9, and finish the week against Post 58 Single A on July 11.
