A perfect 10-0 start to the season for HRV softball was in jeopardy early on at home versus Clackamas, a top-10 team in the state at 5A, on Monday, April 2.
Clackamas jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning against Hannah McNerney, who was on the mound for HRV, and extended that lead by the top of the third to 6-0.
But over the following three innings, the Eagles would outscore Clackamas 7-1, and heading into the bottom of the seventh, this game was tied at 7-7.
Zoe Munn, the leadoff hitter in the home half of the seventh for HRV, hit a double to left field to put the Eagles in scoring position with zero outs on the board.
Next up to bat was McNerney.
Although McNerney got off to a slow start, this was her opportunity for the taking, to seal this game away after seeing the team fight back from being down 6-0.
After a called ball on the first pitch, McNerney connected on the second pitch and drove the ball on a line drive into right field for a walk-off double. Munn would come around from second to score, and the Eagles would win by a final score of 8-7 to move to 10-0 on the season.
HRV racked up seven RBIs and 10 hits on the day versus Clackamas.
Munn, McNerney and Lauren Decker led the way for the Eagles, each tallying multiple RBIs. Munn had a team-high in RBIs with three; McNerney and Decker each had two.
Munn, McNerney and Haylee Baker led the way in hits for HRV, each tallying two of the 10 total.
Emilie Ellifritz, Makenzie Chambers, Morgan Baker and Decker rounded out the Eagles 10 hits, each tallying one apiece.
McNerney took the win for HRV. She allowed nine hits and seven runs over seven innings, striking out 10.
After pulling out a close-game versus Clackamas to keep the girls undefeated season alive, the Eagles would travel to Bend on Wednesday, April 4, to face the OSAA 5A 20th ranked Lava Bears.
HRV would have no problem with the Lava Bears, winning by a final score of 10-1 to move to 11-0 on the season, giving them a current 5A OSAA ranking of four.
The Eagles put this game away early on as they scored six runs in the second inning. Decker, Chambers, McNerney and Kaylin Winans all contributed to the big inning with RBIs.
McNerney led the way offensively for the Eagles, as she racked up five RBIs and two doubles.
The other three RBIs for the Eagles were from Chambers (2) and Decker (1).
Leaders in hits for HRV versus Bend: McNerney (2); Haylee (2); Emma Laney (1); Chambers (1); and Munn (1).
Decker pitched HRV to the 10-1 victory over Bend. She lasted seven innings, allowing eight hits and one run while striking out 11 and walking zero.
At 11-0 on the season, the Eagles have two more non-league games before conference play begins on April 14 in Hermiston.
Sherwood will travel to Hood River on Saturday, April 7 for a matchup with the Eagles; first pitch is scheduled at noon.
Three days later, the girls will welcome Mountain View to Westside Elementary on Tuesday, April 10 for back-to-back home games; this game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
