Arnaldo “Aldo” Lara, a 2011 graduate of Hood River Valley High School, has won the 2017 Oregon Golden Gloves Boxing Title in the 123-pound weight class.
The annual statewide amateur boxing tourney was held Jan. 20-21, in Bend, Oregon. Boxing teams from Oregon, Washington and British Columbia participated during the two-day slug-out.
Lara, a former varsity HRVHS wrestler, received a bye in the 16-bout prelims on Friday, securing a championship fight in the finals. On Saturday, he headlined the eight-bout championship card and soundly out-pointed his opponent to a unanimous decision.
The win gains Lara a berth on Team Oregon when they compete in the Western Regional Championships to be held in Las Vegas, March 3-5. Winners from regional Golden Gloves competitions compete in the national competition, called the Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, in May.
Upon graduating from high school and entering the workforce, Lara chose boxing as a way to continue competing. “I love the competition,” he said. “I’m a competitor and I like the thrill of the battle.”
Lara is a member of the Grand Avenue Boxing Club in Portland. “The Grand” is one of the oldest boxing clubs in the U.S., with origins dating back to 1949.
Created in 1923, the Golden Gloves is the preeminent amateur boxing tournament in the U.S. It is sponsored and controlled by the Golden Gloves Association of America, Inc.
The Tournament of Champions is held once a year, and a new tournament site is selected annually. The U.S. Golden Gloves program is currently organized on a territorial basis to give all sections of the country representation. All tournaments are planned, promoted and directed by the Golden Gloves Charities and within the limits of the amateur boxing code.
All coaches, officials and boxers are registered and members of USA Boxing, part of the USA Olympic organization.
