Continuing the momentum following their state championship in November, select members of the HRV girls water polo team have committed to year-round training and competing in water polo — and are winning.
Jamie Robinson and Rose Finstad in the 16U age group and Olivia Summerfield in the 14U age group have committed to driving three nights a week to Mt. Hood Community College to practice and compete with a regional elite traveling team at Empire Polo Academy. Robinson is an incoming junior, Finstad is an incoming senior, and Summerfield is an incoming freshman.
“It’s been great to continue coaching these players year-round at Empire to compete on a national level” said Coach Dave Robinson. Robinson, who also coaches the boys varsity squad, teams up with a group of regional coaches at MHCC.
Jamie Robinson and Finstad’s 16U team is undefeated both in the Championship League this spring, a Portland regional league, and have taken all three regional tournaments they have competed in against 18U teams including the Rose Cup and are getting used to bringing home the hardware. Summerfield’s 14U team has had similar success, churning through local competition.
“What is fantastic is that we’ll be able to bring all the new skills, schemes and talent back to the high school this fall,” David Robinson said. “I’m super excited that Olivia is training at an elite level this summer as an incoming freshman this fall.”
Jamie Robinson, Finstad, and Summerfield already have some national exposure this spring from participating in the Olympic Development Nationals and will be competing with Empire at the Junior Olympics in July down in Los Angeles.
