The HRV boys tennis team have been road warriors this season, playing their first four contests away, and only getting handed one loss.
On Saturday, however, the Eagles finally got to enjoy a well-deserved home match and despite threatening skies and a slight delay due to wet courts, HRV got in a match with Ridgeview, edging the Ravens 5-3 thanks to a sweep of singles competition.
“After spending the first month of the season on the road with all of this questionable weather, it was great to finally get to play at home,” said HRV Head Coach Jon Hiatt. “It looked iffy there for a while with sprinkles coming down, but it held off and we were able to finish the match without a problem.”
The Eagles got off to a fast start, with Sawyer Bogard sweeping Geoff Leithauser in both sets of the No. 1 singles match. Simon Harsanyi defeated Duncan Tonroe 6-2 in the first set and then edged him 7-5 in the second set of the No. 2 match. Carson Schutt got the upper hand on Cooper Tucker (6-3, 6-4), in No. 3 sets, and Chris Riviello completed the sweep for HRV, taking down Keven Vivanco, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 4 slot.
HRV did not fare nearly as well in doubles competition, losing all but two games in the first two competitions. Adam and Luke Harter fell to the duo of Tyson Neville and Matt Allen 0-6, 1-6, in the first match and Arnulfo Perez and Jay Fiedler lost 1-6, 0-6, to Tommy Wright and Tim Schneider in the second. Charlie Bickford and Nash Levy went to tiebreakers in their first set, losing 6-7 (2) to Joseph Velasquez and Mitchel Wellette, then lost the second set 2-6.
It thus came down to Ben Fick and John Hunter in the No. 4 doubles match to preserve the win for the Eagles, and the duo nearly shut out their opponents, Ethan Hicks and Hunter Bolvie, winning the first set 6-0 and the second set 6-1.
“Great wins to wrap up the win for us by Chris Riviello and the doubles team of John Hunter/Ben Fick,” Hiatt noted.
With exactly a month to go before districts, Hiatt is looking for his team to continue their strong play as they enter league matches.
“We are now heading into our league/district season,” he said. “Hermiston and The Dalles are both going to test us this season in league.”
HRV hosts Hermiston this Wednesday at 4 p.m., for the teams’ first meeting of the season, then will travel to The Dalles Tuesday for a match with the Riverhawks to complete the first round of Columbia River Conference play.
