HOOD RIVER - The Hood River Valley boys wrestling team was third and the girls squad finished fourth at the Rick Sanders Invitational tournament in Portland Dec. 13.
The Eagle boys finished behind Northwest Oregon Conference opponent Canby and Class 6A school Grant at the tourney, which included 21 teams. HRV was led by Copeland Louis, who placed second at 132 pounds, Tysen Baker, who was second at 165, and Owen Waits, who was second at 190.
Louis was 3-1 in wrestled matches; he lost in the final to Canby’s Trey Smith, a state tourney placer in 2025. Baker went 3-0 before losing in the 165-pound final to William Doman, who placed fifth at state in 2025 for Canby at 150 pounds. Waits won three matches before losing in the final to Judah Barnett, a 2025 state tourney wrestler from Grant High.
Ethan Clough won his first two matches for HRV at 126 pounds before losing in the semifinals to eventual champion and 2025 state tourney wrestler Shae Morrison of Ida B Wells, a 6A school from Portland. Clough placed third overall, scoring 14 team points.
At 157 pounds, Eagle teammates Isaac Marshall and Quinn Williams won three matches before meeting in the consolation round. Williams advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Ty Matthews of Canby.
Risor Reierson won two matches after a first-round bye to advance to the semifinals at 190 pounds, where he lost by decision to eventual champion Barnett (Grant High).
Winning at least one match at the tourney for Hood River Cohen Wager (120); Marcus Patrick (120); Drew Lucas (138); Rury Pelayo Ceja (144); Gabriel Avila-Vargas (150); Campton Parker (150); Aaron Smith (215); Aiden Marquez (2-2 record at 285).
The HRV girls were led by four wrestlers, who placed fourth or better. They included two champions: Valeria Solorio Campos at 170 pounds and Shaylee Chavez at 100 pounds. Xiomara Gordian-Gomez was runner-up to her teammate at 170, and Ayleen Marquez was third at 115.
Solorio Campos edged her teammate 3-0 in the 170-pound final. Chavez won three matches at 100 pounds and scored 14 team points for the Eagles. Marquez went 4-1 at the tourney; her lone loss was to Liberty’s Nevaya Gerberg, who was third at state in 2025 at 110.
Abby Piatt (155), Evolet Olivo (135), Madison Rae (115); and Melissa Jara Vela (110) each won matched in the tourney for HRV. Olivo was 2-2; one of her losses was to Ida B Wells senior, Zorina Johnson, who is a two-time state champion and recent signee to attend Lehigh University. Rae also was 2-2 at the tourney.
