The defending OSAA Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 4 girls golf champion Dufur High Rangers finished second in the eight-team District Preview event April 19 at Quail Valley Golf Club in Baker.
The Class 1A Rangers, guided by fourth-year Coach Travis Kane, shot 430, behind the Class 4A first place La Grande High Tigers at 401. Dufur sophomore Tygh Timinsky was medalist, shooting a 86 to win her fifth tournament this year.
Kane said: “We learned what we need to prepare for during the district tournament on May 6 and 7 (at Quail Ridge). The course is very unique and they must play a different style of golf that most of today’s players are unaccustomed to.”
Senior Molly Cochenour shot 98 for fourth place individually, followed by freshman Kaylee Wiles (120) and freshman Piper Murders (126).
The Ranger boys squad took eighth place in the nine-team SD4 Class 3A/2A/1A event with a score of 485. Junior Klayton Schanno led the Rangers with a 100 for 15th place individually out of 58 golfers. Senior Jared Infante (115), junior Sonny Wilson (117) and senior Donald Brewster (153) rounded out Dufur’s four-player team score.
Kane said: “The kids have been working hard diligently to improve throughout the season. The goal every season is to peak when we get close to districts and then, hopefully, we’ll qualify for state and then do the best we can there.”
