WHITE SALMON — Columbia High School’s (CHS) volleyball team lost twice in Trico League play this past week, leaving the Bruins at 0-3 early in the conference season.
Seton Catholic and La Center each beat Columbia by 3-1 margins, leaving the Bruins, Stevenson and Fort Vancouver as the three Trico teams still seeking their first conference wins this fall.
Fort was scheduled to host Columbia on Sept. 23, and the Bruins host co-league leading King’s Way Christian on Sept. 25.
Columbia gave La Center, last season’s fourth-place finisher in the 1A tourney, all it could handle during spurts of last week’s match. A couple of hitting errors enabled La Center to take the first-set lead for good at 11-9, but Columbia kept within striking distance. A Joella Posini push point to the back row pulled the Bruins within 17-14. Later, a Sara Miller kill pulled Columbia to 23-21, but La Center regained serve and served out the match.
Columbia won the second set, 25-20, giving the home crowd some hope. But La Center won the clinching sets, 25-15 and 25-16. Back-to-back Miller kill shots and a left-handed windmill spike from Bella Hamilton pulled Columbia within 20-13, but the Bruins would get no closer in set No. 3.
Columbia played tough early in the fourth set. Hustle plays like Kiana Chambers’ diving dig and subsequent combo stuff block by Hamilton and Posini gave the Bruins their final lead at 6-5. La Center used a 7-0 scoring run to build a 16-9 advantage, and the margin was never less than four points the rest of the way. La Center closed the match with back-to-back kill shots from Whitney Martell and Bailey Espana.
