The Columbia High Bruins boys basketball team is looking to improve on the success it had last season in the WIAA Class 1A Trico League.
The Bruins have a number of reasons to be optimistic, including a young talented group of players for first-year head coach Brady Trullinger. He replaced former coach John Hallead, who is now an assistant coach. Trullinger, a 2017 Columbia High graduate, guided the Bruins’ junior varsity squad to a 12-4 record last season.
“I’m pretty excited about this opportunity, and I’m really looking forward to the start of the season,” said Trullinger, in his first year ever as a varsity head coach. “We have a pretty talented young group of guys with lots of freshmen and sophomores and a couple of juniors. They’re all buddies on and off the court. I’m excited to see them bring their momentum up to the varsity level now.”
The Bruins lost eight players from last year’s squad, including seven seniors who helped lead the team to an overall record of 7-9. Another varsity player from a season ago transferred.
More than 30 players started practice Nov. 13, including three seniors to provide leadership and help guide a young varsity squad. The seniors are Yadier Ruiz, Angel Flores, and Petey Schlegel. Sophomores Hunter Wang and Mason Hamilton are expected to be the Bruins’ top offensive players.
“We have a really young group, but I definitely think our three seniors are going to be good team leaders for us,” said Trullinger. “They all have some talent and they’re all extremely competitive.”
Trullinger said Wang and Hamilton are solid outside shooters. Hamilton, a 6-foot-5 post, will provide the Bruins with some strong defense and shot blocking.
“Overall, our team is going to be quite a bit smaller than last year,” said Trullinger.
The Bruins open their 19-game season Nov. 29 at OSAA Class 5A Hood River Valley (11-13 last year). The Bruins begin their 10-game Trico League schedule Jan. 3 versus the defending champion Seton Catholic Cougars in Vancouver. The Bruins’ first home game is Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. versus OSAA Class 1A Trout Lake (4-14 last year).
