WHITE SALMON — The Columbia High Bruins (CHS)girls soccer team opened its WIAA Class 1A, 13-game Trico League schedule last week facing two of the league contenders at home. The Bruins (0-2), guided by second-year Coach Parker Walker, lost 9-2 to Seton Catholic on Sept. 16, followed by a 7-0 loss to La Center two days later.
“Although our first week of league play resulted in two losses, we are a team determined to learn from our mistakes and get better each day,” said Walker. “Overall, the players are eager to learn new skills, and they’re committed to improving each week. With a clear focus on teamwork and developing strong team chemistry, the squad had built a supportive environment that shows in the way they play on the field along with their attitude off the field, as well. It is a joy to coach this team and I’m looking forward to our games this week.”
The Bruins squad is led by an experienced group of five seniors — Mila Lowery, Sage Witherrite, Mariela Casarez, Abby Hanson and Sylvia Pimley — who each bring a depth of soccer knowledge to the team.
In their season opening contest versus the Cougars, the Bruins fell behind 6-1 at halftime. Bruin junior Willow Cohen scored a first-half goal on a 12-yard penalty kick. Bruin sophomore Sofia Vicente scored a goal in the second half. Columbia junior goalkeeper Lani Uffelman had 17 saves.
Two days later versus La Center, the Bruins played a solid first half, trailing 1-0 at halftime. The Bruins’ offense was out of sync in the second half and they also struggled defensively, getting outscored 6-0. Uffelman had 12 saves.
The Bruins play three games in five days this week, including a Sept. 23 home game versus the Fort Vancouver High Trappers (1-1 Trico, 3-2 overall). The Bruins play at King’s Way on Sept. 25 and at home on Sept. 27 against Kalama.
