The Columbia High boys soccer team used its 2-0 loss to Seton Catholic before spring break as motivation for a 3-2 Trico League win over Kings Way Christian (3-2 league, 4-2 overall) on April 9.
The Bruins won three games last week and next play April 18 at Stevenson before a key 6 p.m., April 23 rematch against Seton.
In the come-from-behind win vs. Kings Way, junior Ulices Huerta drew a penalty and then converted the ensuing penalty kick to tie the game, 1-1. The game was a tough, physical battle with both sides having scoring opportunities.
Damian Sanchez, Alex Baldwin, Ricardo Diaz, Cole Wooding, and Juan Santoyo manned the Bruin defense in front of goalie Alfonso Serrato. The Bruin senior made a key save and shortly thereafter, sophomore Matt Miller broke free and scored off an assist from senior Angel Flores. A few minutes later, Miller scored his second goal to seal the win.
On April 11, Columbia hosted Toledo-Winlock United (0-4 league, 1-5 overall) and won 10-0. Coach Gio Magana-Rivera rotated the squad heavily, mixing up the lineup allowing players to rest. Eight Columbia players scored: Wooding (2), Isaac Reynoso (2), Matthew Carrillo, Humberto Pulido, Manny Barajas, Uli Huerta, Matt Miller, and Luke Miller. Four of the goals were scored on set pieces.
On April 13, the Bruins traveled to La Center (2-4 league, 3-7 overall) and won, 2-1. Columbia drew first blood with a goal by Matt Miller from a cross by Reynoso. The Bruins went up 2-0 in the first half when Luke Miller knocked in a goal assisted on by Wooding.
The Bruins controlled most of the game led by the work of Huerta in center midfield.
The three wins for Columbia (5-1 league, 7-2 overall after last week) put it in second place in the Class 1A Trico League and improved the Bruins to 10th in the WIAA statewide rankings.
