Sherman High took third place in the four-team district volleyball tournament this past weekend and will now play in the Class 1A state playoffs this week.
The No. 21-ranked Sherman County High Huskies qualified for the 32-team OSAA Class 1A volleyball state playoffs following a 3-0 win over the Dufur High Rangers in a Big Sky League district playoff game Wednesday at Condon High School.
MAUPIN – Volleyball action is heating up in the 1A classification, and early indications are that the Big Sky Conference is wide open for the taking.
Through the quarter pole of the volleyball season, South Wasco County is 3-1 atop the leaderboard, and hot on their heels are Echo, Dufur, Ione, Condon, Sherman and Mitchell-Spray, with only the top four teams picking up district invitations.
The Horizon Christian Boys Basketball team had a victorious weekend as they took care of business Friday and Saturday with wins over the Dufur Rangers (57-42) and the South Wasco County Redside (47-41). The Hawks improved to 12-1 in the league after the weekend.
In league games on consecutive nights, the South Wasco County Redsides defeated Mitchell-Spray, 65-49, on Monday and then lost to Arlington by a 62-38 final Tuesday in boys varsity hoops play.
Over a span of four days, the Sherman volleyball team lost 3-1 to Cove, but then came back for two straight wins over Trinity Lutheran in three non-league matches. After their loss to Cove, the Huskies swept the Trinity Lutheran Saints 25-15, 25-20 and 25-23 on Friday, Aug. 24 in Moro to give first-year head coach Karissa Gorham.
