The No. 11-ranked South Wasco County High Redsides won their first Class 1A Big Sky League Volleyball District Championship since 2018 on Oct. 22 at The Dalles High School’s Kurtz Gym.

The No. 13-ranked South Wasco County High Redsides won three more Class 1A Big Sky League volleyball games last week to conclude the regular season with an undefeated record.

Oscar Thomas and Kylie Iverson of South Wasco County were the Big Sky West basketball players of the year by a vote of the league’s coaches.

The teams were announced at the conclusion of the Big Sky championship games this past weekend.

It’s playoff time in Class 1A volleyball as the six-team Big Sky Conference District Tournament starts Wednesday. The No. 15 ranked South Wasco County High Redsides earned the Big Sky West Division No. 1 seed with a 6-0 league record and a 16-6 overall mark.

The South Wasco County High Redsides have been one of the most dominating teams in the OSAA Class 1A Big Sky League recently and there’s every indication that they’ll continue to be the top contender again this season.

The Redsides reached the state playoffs three consecutive seasons from 2017-2019 and they probably would’ve made a fourth straight appearance in 2020. However, that season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The South Wasco County High girls basketball team advanced to the 16-team, 1A state playoffs this week at Baker High School. The Redsides played the North Douglas High Warriors (7-0) in a first-round playoff game Monday at Powder Valley High School (results came after the printed edition deadline).

In what would have to be considered as their most impressive win of the season, the Dufur High Rangers won 48-44 over their adjacent county rival South Wasco in a Class 1A girls basketball game Saturday at Dufur High School.

A five-game loss to Echo seemed to rejuvenate the South Wasco County Redsides.

SWC continued its solid early-season league run with back-to-back sweep wins over Condon (25-21, 25-18, 25-17) and Dufur (25-11, 25-23, 25-16) to stay ahead in the league standings by one game.
