There will be some unusual familiarity in the Bruin basketball system this winter, whenever the Columbia High girls’ team takes the court. The unusual part stems from the fact that the team has an entirely new coaching staff, albeit one that is very familiar with its players.

First-year Head Coach Justin Frazier and assistant Clinton Curtis have been long-time youth coaches for various Gorge sports, including traveling basketball. Chris Lloyd and Rebecca Scully will coach the CHS junior varsity program.

A year ago, a very young Columbia High Bruins girls soccer team — with nine freshmen — struggled for most of the season, facing teams with more experienced players. The Bruins won one WIAA Class 1A Trico League contest and recorded just six wins by the conclusion of the 2021 season.

With just four seniors lost to graduation off of last year’s team, it would be easy to assume this year’s Columbia High School football squad will be all grown up this year.

In past seasons, losing six seniors off a varsity boys soccer team at Columbia High would lead to rebuilding talk for the subsequent season, but Coach Daniel Mangum’s program enjoyed a large turnout of players this spring. That, and the talent level of some of the younger players, bodes well for the Bruins’ future.

The Dalles High Riverhawks baseball team will be focusing on having its first full season in three years when they play their 2022 opener March 15 at 4:30 p.m. against the Putnam High Kingsmen at Quinton Street Ballpark.

The Hawks played a COVID-shortened, six-week schedule last year, posting a 3-14 record — including a 3-7 Intermountain Conference mark.
