In the big picture, Columbia High’s four-set loss to always tough Castle Rock on Oct. 13 may be the impetus the Bruins need to make a late-season run to the district playoffs. Columbia did get its first league win the past week, 3-1, at Seton Catholic on Oct. 11. That victory enabled the Bruins to remain in playoff contention.
The path to Trico League volleyball supremacy continues to go through Castle Rock and La Center, as the Columbia High Bruins experienced this past week.
Defense usually trumps offense early in the season, and the Columbia High volleyball team proved that adage correct Saturday with a four-set nonleague win at Goldendale.
Columbia High’s volleyball team attained a season goal by reaching the district playoffs, but that’s where the Bruins’ run ended Saturday.
The Bruins lost to the Trico League’s runner-up, La Center, at the District 4 tournament at King’s Way High School in Vancouver. Columbia had advanced to Saturday’s second round at district by winning one of two matches Nov. 3 at Castle Rock.
Columbia High moved above .500 in Trico League volleyball play Thursday with a three-set, playoff-clinching road win at Seton Catholic.
Equally important, the Bruins finished the week by improving their overall record to 8-4 after also winning a district cross-over match Oct. 12 against Elma and placing second at a tournament Saturday in Corbett.
Columbia High enters its Trico League volleyball schedule this week buoyed by a non-league home win against Riverside on Sept. 21, when Coach Heidi Shultz said her team continued its improved play.
