To the editor:
As an avid Dalles Chronicle reader, I was disappointed to learn about the growing rift between Mid-Columbia Medical Center’s CEO and local nurses over increasingly dangerous schedules, nurse turnover, staff pay and the hospital’s budget.
It reminded me of an article I read a few years ago about the highest-paid people in Wasco County. According to the article, Mid-Columbia’s CEO is the highest-paid person in the county and was reported as making nearly $675,000 a year.
In fact, the top four highest-paid people in the county are all Mid-Columbia executives. Together, they make more than the next 10 highest-paid people in the county combined.
I’m sure Mid-Columbia’s CEO works hard for his $675,000 a year, and I don’t begrudge anyone for making a good living. But if my choices are to keep paying Mid-Columbia’s executives more than everyone else who lives here OR to hire more skilled nurses and pay them a fair wage, I know what I’m choosing.
Count me with the nurses on this one.
In last week’s article, one of Mid-Columbia’s high-paid executives said the hospital is looking for ways to ‘control costs’. I’d start by looking in the mirror.
