Letter to the editor: M100 facts

I am very disappointed in the The Dalles Chronicle’s editorial board’s lack of endorsement of Measure 100 and misstatement of facts.

Did the board even bother to read the information in the voter’s pamphlet regarding the ballot measure? Twenty-two newspapers across the state have endorsed Measure 100.

I especially take exception to the following statements in The Chronicle:

“The problem with M100 is that legal hunts of exotic animals are allowed by very strict laws at a higher level of government.”

In reality, big game trophy hunters paying big bucks kill lions such as Cecil the Lion without consequence. Furthermore the ballot measure has nothing to do with how these endangered animals are hunted as it only pertains to sales of their parts.

The article went on to say the measure could target people importing hunted trophies. Once again, this ballot measure would only affect them if they tried to sell the animal parts. In regards to these people, are they so heartless that they believe the desire to display the dead body parts of an endangered animal on their wall is more important than protecting these animals from extinction?

The article also inaccurately stated that the measure would target “musicians and gun owners whose instruments and antique guns contain ivory.” In reality the measure contains exceptions, including those for musical instruments and antiques.
