We have a wonderful neighborhood, including many children, dogs and dog walkers. One older retired couple walks their two dogs twice daily. They are valuable members of our community, truly animal lovers, gentle souls who rescue dogs, support Home at Last and have been the bird feeder volunteers at the Veteran’s Home for many years.
Late last month while walking in the evening, a pit bull attacked one of their dogs. As a result, one of their dogs needed multiple stitches. Beyond that, though, is this horror: the gentleman had his thumb bitten off to the first knuckle by the attacking dog. This is, for any of us, life-altering. He spent many hours in the ER, is now seeing a specialist, his wife has to change the dressing, it will be a long road to recovery – and he will never have full use of his thumb again.
This is not the first incident the attacking dog has been involved in. It was removed by Animal Control; however, there will be a hearing before a decision is made regarding what happens next. I understand the affection the owner has for the dog, but this dog should never be returned to the neighborhood.
