Letter to the editor: Greedy for wealth

Just to put this in proportion, I’d like to point out that $1 million is $50,000 per year for 20 years; $10 million is $50,000 per year for 200 years; and $1 billion is $50,000 per year for 20,000 years. We’re so used to hearing numbers like a million, ten million and a billion that it can be easy to become numb to them. I think it’s helpful to people to see what those numbers represent in terms of the kind of money we’re all struggling to live on these days.

Unless we can get control of this runaway overconsumption and greed on the part of the very wealthy, and spread some of those profits around among those of us doing the work that actually keeps our society going, the future is not going to be much brighter for the vast majority of us—the hardworking majority who actually do the work that keeps society, and corporations, going.
