My name is Faith Lindley and I am a sixth grade teacher in South Wasco. Currently there is a lot going on in education that seems to put a negative light on schools and what teachers are preparing their students for; however, I would like to see if there is a way you could help me share the good things that some teachers like myself are doing to help keep education engaging and purposeful for our students.
I am currently seeking donations for classroom materials through a site called www.donorschoose.org. This site allows full time classroom teachers to put up educational projects that need funding and/or materials that the districts cannot fund due to budget reasons.
The teacher follows a series of prompts that go through an approval system and then get posted onto their national site. This national site shares this information where companies like Disney, UPS and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation can show their support for what teachers are doing as well. I share my link, www.donorschoose.org/camplindley, with my community through Facebook and with my student’s families at the beginning of the year to rally support around the projects that we are doing and the learning that is going on.
Last year I was able to get some of the camping gear necessary to take my sixth grade class on a weeklong camping trip to Wallow Lake to learn about the positive and negative impacts humans have on the environment. We had lessons on photography, plant identification, outdoor cooking and tested the water quality of three different bodies of water and compared them to our local area. Not to mention my class learned how to set up an entire campsite with five tents and two awnings. This year I am ramping up the level of learning by including a more comprehensive outdoor cooking unit where students can learn about healthy eating outdoors.
We will continue to do our hiking, fishing, photography, first aid and water quality education, but my students have all passed their Oregon Food Handler’s license and they are ready to have some outdoor cooking supplies that will make this learning experience complete. Thank you for your time on the matter.
