Letter to the editor: Consider the jobs

His letter quotes the DEQ as deeming the facility’s discharges as not dangerous to humans, but he finds the smell to be personally offensive.

I live on the east side of town and have never smelled the tie plant at my house – as a matter of fact, in the 70 years I have been in The Dalles, the only places I have smelled the tie plant are from Old Dufur Road and East Second Street.

The U.H. Baxter/Amerities facility has provided good living-wage jobs in The Dalles since the 1920s and currently has more than 40 employees.

I respect the efforts being made to protect our environment.

At the same time, we need to give a little consideration to the people who need those jobs in order to support their families and thrive in our community.

Nothing personal, John, just sayin’…
