Over the past month, Columbia Cascade Housing Corporation (CCHC) has witnessed a raise in the number of community members facing foreclosure. Even though our staff is busier than we’d like to report in working with our neighbors to avoid foreclosure I’d like to provide a reminder that CCHC stands ready to help those who are struggling to pay their mortgages in Hood River, Wasco and Sherman Counties.
CCHC is the local partner to the Oregon Foreclosure Avoidance (OFA) Program; a mandatory, statewide foreclosure mediation program. Before most lenders can begin foreclosure of a residential trust deed, they must request a face-to-face meeting with the homeowner through OFA.
The process is simple. The homeowner pays a fee, meets with a housing counselor, submits documents, and shows up at the meeting. The lender must produce information about the loan and send a representative with complete authority to negotiate and commit to a foreclosure alternative.
We certainly understand that people face foreclosures for many reasons, but it is most important to note that no one benefits from foreclosure and it is ok to ask for help. More information can be found at www.oregonhomeownersupport.gov or by contacting Columbia Cascade Housing Corporation’s Housing Resource Center at (541) 296-3397.
