The Dalles To the editor:
In response to the letter blasting President Obama for trying to talk things out, striving for world peace and understanding: There is so much I find not only wrong but repellant, I just decided not to confuse the writer with facts as his mind is made up.
However, I feel one line in his letter summed up everything that is wrong with the many who would make our laws: “the tough Irish brothers down the street.” My granddad was born on the boat over from Ireland. In a time when “Irish need not apply” he was discriminated against because of his pale freckled skin, red hair, Catholic upbringing, Irish lilt and stocky build. He was the kindest, most gentle person I have ever known. Projecting one’s personal beliefs and prejudices on those “different” with no trying to understand them has no place in American politics.
In Texas in the 60s, their was a bumper sticker: “If you ain’t Texan, you ain’t s--t.” Should we have one now that says, “if you ain’t ninth generation, pink skinned, husband kowtowing, straight, saber-rattling, whiskey but no pot, Protestant you ain’t s--t”? OMGosh! does this statement make me one of those unbending people with preset ideas? Naahhh.
Kudos to Dr. McMillan, Jr.’s letter of the same day stating that love and commitment are the answers to ... well, just the answer. That was another bumper sticker from the 60s, “Love is the answer.” Always has been, always will be.
