God is a giver of gifts, not a taker. And the proper response on receiving a gift is to say “thank you.” It’s cause and effect, action and reaction. Did you ever work in a thankless job? Have you ever worked your tail off at something just to not receive any kind of appreciation for your efforts? Being God must seem like a thankless job, at times. Jesus could have easily felt like He gave his life for a bunch of ingrates. As we find ourselves in this season of Thanksgiving, there is no better time to renew our commitment to appreciate everything the Lord has done and will do. In self reflection we should count the things we have, not the things we don’t have. To look back on the protection and provision that pours out of a relationship based on love and generosity, bestowed lavishly on us, His children.
Eternally grateful
This should be our attitude toward God the Father. Not a moment should go by that we aren’t thankful because we owe Him for that moment. And the next. And each moment after that.
It should be easy to find reasons to say “Thank you Lord.” We thank each other, many times, without even thinking about it. It comes natural, when someone helps you with something, or gives you something. We teach our children to say “please” and “thank you.”
If our intentions are pure, we don’t give something in order to hear “thank you”, but it doesn’t hurt to hear it. Who doesn’t like hearing they are appreciated? If we take the effort to say “thank you” to the guy who holds the door open for us, how much more grateful should we be to God for, well, everything else?
Thank you Jesus
The Bible teaches that after Christ died on the cross and ascended into heaven, He sat down at the right hand of the Father. He didn’t sit because He was tired, He sat because He was finished. The work which brought salvation to all who would receive it was completed.
We should be ever so grateful that Jesus took on death for us that we could have eternal life. And make no mistake, this is the greatest gift ever given, and the proper response is to express our thanks not just during this season but every day in everything we do and say. We cannot thank Him enough.
It doesn’t cost anything to give thanks, so we should do it early and often. Count your blessings and say “Thank you, Jesus.”
