CARSON — Two small fires that ignited almost simultaneously in Skamania County on June 11 are now completely contained.
Both adjacent to the Columbia, the Sand Hills Fire burned 20 acres just south of Carson, and the Grant Lake Fire scalded 10 acres east of Dog Mountain. The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office subsequently closed State Route 14 in both directions between mileposts 47 and 55 last Wednesday afternoon.
Officials also shut down Interstate-84 due to the ongoing Rowena Fire around the same time, halting most traffic in the Mid-Columbia region through early Thursday morning (related story, A1).
“It’s concerning that on June 11 we’re seeing this type of fire behavior. With that being said, it’s absolutely incredible to see all of the volunteers, because Skamania County only has volunteer firefighters within the county, to see the incredible response and fast actions of all the departments,” said Sheriff Scheyer.
The county mobilized four of its volunteer crews, alongside North Bonneville Fire, Washington’s Department of Natural Resource and the United States Forest Service. Scheyer’s office issued Level 2 (Be Set) evacuation orders for the area on June 11 and downgraded them to Level 1 (Be Ready) Thursday afternoon, lifting the order just a few hours later.
