Hood River City Council is evaluating the need for an updated curbside garbage, recycling and composting program. Citizens have cited concerns with the current system in regards to nuisance (cans blowing over, lids flying off), worker safety (residents and workers lifting heavy cans) and interest in expanded recycling services (greater access to recycling, and/or curbside compost collection). Tri-County Hazardous Waste & Recycling has launched a public survey to gather input from Hood River residents to further inform the Hood River City Council in evaluating curbside collection services.

A waste study commissioned by Tri-County Hazardous Waste & Recycling in 2010 revealed that nearly 40 percent of the residential waste stream in Hood River is compostable (food waste and yard debris). Currently, Hood River Garbage accepts self-haul brush and yard debris at the Hood River transfer station for $12.28 per cubic yard, or free to Hood River City residents on Wednesdays. There are currently no options for residential food waste recycling.
