Police Reports: Nov. 1, 2023

A stolen vehicle was recovered on Oct. 17 in Bingen, and the owner contacted.

Two animal calls were logged in Bingen.

Three alarms were logged, all unfounded.

Hood River Police, Oct. 15 - 21

The following are crimes which resulted in arrests: Disorderly conduct (two), DUII (two), driving while suspended (two), theft (two), warrant (five).

Notable incidents

Five theft reports. Vehicle, bicycle, shoplifting (two incidents), and theft of cash via a text scam. In one incident, officers responded to Safeway regarding a disorderly transient person who had stolen and destroyed merchandise inside the store. The suspect was later located and transported to NORCOR on charges of theft, disorderly conduct, and outstanding warrants.

Five warrant arrests. In one incident, officers arrested and lodged an individual for a US Marshall warrant.

Two DUII arrests. In one incident, a non-resident person was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, and a breath test yielded a blood alcohol content of more than twice the legal limit.

Officers took a report of a cold burglary at a business.

Officers took a report of a restraining order violation.

The Dalles Police, Oct. 20 - 27

The following are crimes which resulted in arrests: Assault (one), DUII (one), interfere with making a police report (one), trespass (one), warrant (eight).

Notable incidents

Units followed up on the Oct. 19 plane crash the following morning (see logs and photo in Columbia Gorge News, Oct. 25). A caller that morning passed on the pilot's ID. Officers were also informed that the downed power lines are never guaranteed to be re-energized and there may be a residual charge in the lines; therefore units should remain clear. Estimated arrival time for the delayed BPA crew was not determined as of the call.

One hit and run reports. Locations include the 300 block of Union Street.

Five vehicle crash reports, no injuries noted in logs. In one incident, a maroon Nissa rolled “off a hill” above an address on Lincoln Avenue. The vehicle was towed. In another, a public works pickup got in a crash on Third and Union. The pickup was undamaged, the other vehicle had minor damage. In another, a vehicle struck a building on Sixth Street, causing minor damage to a pole and possibly damage to the vehicle. In another, a black SUV struck multiple parked vehicles on Fourteenth Street, according to callers.

One burglary report. Multiple items, including a dirtbike and tools, were taken from a building on 16th Street, which was broken into at about 2 a.m.

Six theft reports. Medication from mailbox, toolbox from truck, boat from Pleasant Court, shoplifting. In one incident, a suspect walked off from a Mt Hood Street location with a black US Bank bag of money under their arm. About $5,000 was in the bag. No weapons were seen. Upon arrival, officers search the area but were unable to locate the two involved persons. Witness statements were collected and investigation is ongoing. In another incident, an unknown person used cable cutters to free five to six toolboxes from each other and absconded from the Sixth Street address with them and also with an unknown amount of power tools.

A stolen e-bike was located by its owner, and officers assisted in its recovery.

Thirty mental health calls were logged.

Twenty-five animal calls were logged. Dogs at large, dogs shut in yard and possibly in the habit of escaping, dogs in a crate with sharp items, chickens at large in the street, welfare check on dog in vehicle, alleged animal abuse, dog bite (two incidents). In one incident, four allegedly abandoned kittens on Third Street were picked up by their owner.

A criminal mischief report was taken for the egging of a vehicle on I Street, by a small green car which then headed toward the Middle School.

Wasco County Sheriff, Oct. 20 - 27

The following are crimes which resulted in arrests: Restraining order violation (one), warrant (three).

Notable incidents

Two warrant arrests. In one incident, deputies pursued a person on foot around apartments near Highway 30, before detaining and arresting them on a warrant. The person was first reported as a trespasser, allegedly going through the reporting party’s stuff on a patio and pounding on their door.

Deputies were assisted by The Dalles Police in detaining a black Honda Civic which sped down I-84 eastbound, from Cascade Locks to The Dalles, at speeds of over 100 miles per hour. The Honda was first clocked at 103 mph as it pulled up behind a deputy on I-84. It followed the deputy until the they exited in Hood River, before speeding away. The deputy then paced the vehicle at 110 mph, and still observed it pulling away. They pulled the Civic over near The Dalles and provided the driver with a couple of citations.

An overdose was reported on Third Street on Oct. 20. A deputy assisted Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue. Two doses of narcan were administered and the patient woke up and declined medical assistance.

Two theft reports. Food stolen from a porch freezer; propane bottle and gage from camper.

Eleven animal calls were logged. Dogs at large; dogs barking; ongoing issue with “wild” goats entering wheat field; retrieval of horse at large. In one incident, a loose cow was called in on Chenowith Creek. “There is someone trying to get the cow but it isn’t their element,” logs stated. “The cow is running south.” In another incident, four steer at large were reported on McDonald Way. The steers were of unknown ownership or provenance. They were not in the road. Later on Oct. 21, four steers were corralled on Chenowith and picked up by their owner. Logs did not note whether these were the same four escape artists or not.

Oregon State Police, Oct. 20 - 24

Notable incidents

One non-injury vehicle crash. A westbound Honda Accord hydroplaned and drove into the ditch of I-84, near milepost 143. It popped two tires. The driver arranged the tow.
