Notable incidents
One DUII arrest. In one incident, an off-duty trooper observed a silver Chevrolet Cruz stuck in the snow on the shoulder of US-197 near milepost 10 and stopped to check on the driver, who was visible intoxicated. Another trooper responded, and the impaired driver was arrested and transported to NORCOR, where they made an escape attempt in the sally port, kicked a corrections sergeant in the stomach, and attempted to escape a second time. The driver was placed on the ground. A warrant was obtained for the driver’s breath and blood, and they provided a breath sample of almost three times the legal limit, and were lodged at NORCOR on multiple charges.
Troopers cited an individual for take/possession of non-game animal regarding an incident on Mill Creek Road, The Dalles.
Seven non-injury crash reports. In one incident, troopers responded to a truck hauling a windmill blade that had gone off the roadway while eastbound on I-84 near milepost 71. The driver was rounding a corner when the rear of their truck was sucked off the side of the road by snow, and became stuck. The blade was blocking the right lane, and partially blocking the left lane. The freeway was shut down for roughly an hour while a tow company dislodged the truck, which then continued on its way. In another incident, a commercial motor vehicle was cautiously navigating very icy road conditions at a slow speed and was struck from behind by another such truck, which was unable to stop because the driver lost control on the extremely icy roads. The trucks came to an uncontrolled rest in the median, blocking the fast lane, and were towed. In another incident, troopers responded to a crash involving a box truck and a commercial tractor trailer at northbound milepost 58 on US 197. Both were towed and the tractor driver received multiple violation and criminal citations.
Two vehicle crashes involving injury. A vehicle was stopped on the shoulder of I-84 near milepost 116 in Gilliam County Jan. 20, and could not drive due to ice and poor tire tread. Another vehicle attempted to merge into the left lane to avoid hitting it. Meanwhile, a third vehicle, traveling too fast on the ice, was unable to stop and rear-ended the merging vehicle, causing one of them to hit the original parked vehicle. One of the parked vehicle’s occupants was hit and sustained multiple injuries. The other occupants all complained of pain, and were transported to an area hospital. Two vehicles were towed, but one was able to drive away. In another incident, troopers and Hood River County deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash with minor injuries. A brown Nissan Murano, driving too fast for conditions, hydroplaned and struck the median. It then bounced to the guardrail, broke through and came to an uncontrolled rest on the railroad tracks. The driver and sole occupant was able to self-extricate before the vehicle was struck by a train. The driver was transported to the local hospital with minor injuries. The vehicle was towed.
One hit and run. A trooper checked on a disabled commercial motor vehicle on Jan. 21. The driver explained that their cab had been sideswiped by another commercial motor vehicle’s trailer, and the other driver never stopped. They were provided with crash report information. No tow was required.
