Separately, an eastbound Honda Odyssey on I-84 lost control when a rear tire failed, spinning and crashing into the center barrier. In a third incident, an eastbound Kia SUV drifted onto the shoulder of I-84 near milepost 144. The driver over-corrected and lost control, crossing both lanes of traffic and rolling on the shoulder. The driver was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries. The vehicle came to rest off the roadway, and was towed.
A complainant, who claimed to be a passenger in a vehicle, said the driver of a white Subaru Ascent menaced them with a silver handgun on I-84. A trooper detained the Ascent’s occupants, who denied the incident but recounted a road rage incident with a gray Dodge Charger. The owner consented to a search, which found nothing resembling firearms. The occupants were released. Gilliam County deputies interviewed the Charger’s driver, and found he wasn’t the original complainant and saw no firearms. The original complainant could not be located and had left no contact info.
Four DUII arrests. In one incident, a silver BMW nearly sideswiped a trooper’s patrol car on Fairgrounds Road on Aug. 16. The trooper stopped it, investigated and arrested the driver for DUII. Separately, a commercial truck rolled on its side on Highway 97, milepost 47 southbound and lay there smoking. It seemed the truck left the road more than 540 feet away. It over-corrected and slid across the highway before rolling on the northbound shoulder. The driver admitted to meth use three days prior and showed signs of intoxication. They were arrested and the vehicle towed. In another incident, a driver was found asleep beside I-84 in a freshly-damaged vehicle, with a mostly-empty vodka on the passenger seat. Neither was injured in the resulting rash, but the passenger got arrested and lodged on charges of reckless driving and reckless endangerment. A witness who estimated their speed at 75 mph, a physical search which found no film, and road evidence suggesting a rapid, sudden turn contradicted the story.
