Crash fatal — A driver died on Highway 216 on March 11, according to Oregon State Police (OSP). Troopers responded to the single-vehicle crash near milepost 23 westbound at about 1:43 p.m. and found driver Samuel Timothy Crafard (72) of Maupin deceased there.
Crafard’s passenger, a 78-year-old Maupin resident, was transported to an area hospital for minor injuries.
The initial investigation found Crafard’s westbound Ford F150 left the road, got in the westbound ditch, hit a culvert and flipped onto its roof. The highway was closed for three hours during this investigation.
Juniper Flat Rural Fire District, Wasco County Sheriff’s Office, and Oregon Department of Transportation helped OSP.
Charges made — March 7-14, Oregon State Police charged people with driving while suspended or revoked (one), DUII (one), false information (one), reckless endangering (one), and warrant (two). That week, The Dalles Police charged people with drug law violation (two), hit and run (one), restraining order violation (one), theft (one), trespass (two), and warrants (five). The week of March 2-8, Hood River police charged people with DUII (three), false information (one), reckless driving (one), theft (two), warrant (four). Wasco County Sheriff’s Office does not log arrests.
Camera security — On March 8, a vehicle at the White River Sno-Park was broken into and items taken — including a Vosker’s game camera which continued to transmit photos to the owner after its theft. OSP sent an email to a Vosker’s law enforcement division to access specific GPS data on the camera’s last location.
Two injury crashes — On March 7 a FedEx truck, turning north onto Hwy 35, hit a Subaru which spun into oncoming traffic, the driver getting minor injuries. On March 12, a single vehicle rolled on I-84 in Gilliam County, resulting in minor injuries. The driver said they hydroplaned while driving too fast for conditions.
Crashes on highways — March 7, a pickup failed to yield while merging onto I-84, Exit 62 westbound. The pickup’s driver hit a GMC and got a flat tire and a citation — and a tow, because the spare tire was rusted in place. March 12, a Honda Accord lost control on I-84 near milepost 53.5 eastbound and swiped a slope of rock. The Accord rolled over, stopping upside-down in the road. Neither driver nor infant passenger was hurt. March 13, two commercial vehicles struck mirrors on I-84 near milepost 54 eastbound after one failed to maintain lane. Wasco County Sheriff also logged four crashes that week, on E. 2nd Street, Highway 216/Juniper Flat, Steele Road/Threemile and I-84.
Speeding with kids — On March 8, a state trooper stopped a Chrysler Pacifica for driving 78 mph in a 65 mph zone. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence of marijuana, and also charged with recklessly endangering their juvenile passengers.
Robbery — Wasco County Sheriff’s Office logged a robbery on Chenowith Creek Road on March 13.
Dead or alive — The Dalles dispatch got 25 animal calls March 7-13: Dogs at large, jumping fences, attacking each other, barking; alleged animal neglect; and cat hit by car and killed. A dog owner on E. 8th was contacted regarding a dog that a municipal court judge had ordered to be destroyed. And a raccoon was hit by a car on 19th Street, taken to Taylor Lake and dispatched. Wasco County Sheriff’s Office also logged six animal calls.
Fraud, tools and loans — The Dalles police took 12 theft reports March 7-13: Fraud (five), work tools from truck on 11th Street, about $1,000 in stored windows and a riding lawn mower, three packages from E. 12th Street porch, a cooler from outside 2nd Street store, and an SSI check. In another incident, someone took out a fraudulent student loan in Nebraska using a local’s name. And finally, a someone tried to buy from a store using two fake $100 bills. Wasco County dispatch also got a fraud call and a theft call.
Five thefts — reported by Hood River Police March 2-8: Stolen vehicle, shoplifting (two), purse from vehicle, and theft of package delivered to business. In one incident, an officer arrested an adult for shoplifting at a local grocery. The suspect refused to provide a name and therefore was booked and lodged at NORCOR on March 3.
Can do — In one incident, a reporting party said four people jumped their fence and stole cans. An officer responded and located an individual who was arrested for theft III and unlawful possession of meth.
Three — The Dalles dispatch got up to three mental health calls between March 7-13.
Burglary — On March 20, a burglary was reported on Sixth Street when security personnel saw someone quickly enter and leave a building. The back fence had been cut. Officers arrested a suspect for third-degree mischief and third-degree theft.
Light out — The Dalles reported two hit-and-run incidents last week. In one, city personnel had to clean up the debris of one of their light poles on E. Second after a hit-and-run on March 11.
Assault — An assault (not domestic) was logged on March 10. The reporting party was hit in the face several times.
Four DUII arrests — made by Hood River and Oregon State police last week. In one, a Hood River resident was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving; tests found their blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit of 0.08%.
