Injured in crash — A driver was injured after losing control on a patch of ice or frost on I-84 and sliding off the freeway near milepost 76 eastbound. The vehicle rolled completely, coming to rest on its tires again. The 53-year-old Hood River resident was transported by ambulance.
Suspect crashes — Someone allegedly stole an idling 2025 Ford F150 from Dinty’s Market, in The Dalles, around 5:17 a.m. on Jan. 29. Wasco County deputies pursued the vehicle, then lost sight of it. But at about 6 a.m. the suspect crashed the truck on a sweeping corner leading down into Maupin, skidding into a rock embankment and stopping upside-down. A witness said the driver, later arrested by WCSO, seemed intoxicated. The truck required a tow.
OSP’s three crashes — A Honda CRV, southbound on Hwy 197 near milepost 60, struck a fallen rock in the middle of the lane. The driver said they didn’t avoid the rock, due to thinking it was a brown paper bag. A tow was required, and ODOT to clear the rocks. Separately, a semi-truck hit a passenger car while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle during a pass. And a Subaru driver fishtailed on icy I-84 near Rowena, shot into an embankment and rolled.
Drunk drivers — Multiple driving complaints of a vehicle which turned around in the median of I84 near milepost 101 eastbound, led an Oregon State Police trooper who witnessed the suspect nearly strike a commercial truck to pull it over. The driver was arrested for DUII and reckless driving, and a warrant granted for their breath for drug testing. That showed a blood alcohol level of 0.24%, three times the legal limit. Separately, a driver was arrested for DUII, and a search of their vehicle found a pipe containing methamphetamine.
And in Hood River, officers lodged a Kansas resident at NORCOR on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, and hit-and-run, near Center Market. The driver refused to give a breath sample, so a search warrant for a blood draw was granted by a Hood River Circuit Court Judge.
Dogs look hungry — The Dalles police reported dogs at large, missing, appearing distressed. In one incident, a dog escaped in the city and allegedly attacked another dog and its owner. In another, a hungry-looking dog — already subject to the animal control officer’s attention — aggressively cornered a person who happened to be carrying some just-purchased raw chicken. Other, allegedly neglected dogs were impounded. County deputies also logged six dogs.
Overdoses — An overdose was reported on Second, near the skate park. MCFR responded, and narcan was administered by an officer. Another overdose was reported near First/Union. And a welfare check was requested on someone laying unresponsive in the bark dust on Mt. Hood Street. One narcan was given with no effect, and medics transported the patient to hospital. And in Hood River, responded to a medical call for an alleged overdose. On scene, officers found a small baggy and white cup containing methamphetamine, which they collected for destruction.
Jerky on the sidewalk — A person was contact for selling jerky on the street at Lone Pine Boulevard, and informed ordinances prohibit selling food on a public right of way.
Five thefts — The Dalles police reported shoplifting (two), wallet, UPS package from porch on Seventh Street. Hood River police cited one person for shoplifting at Walmart.
Burglars three — Two burglaries of Ninth-Street shops or sheds were reported last weekend. In one, the lock was broken off the door; in the other, screws finagled out; and equipment and tools stolen from both. Hood River police reported a burglary at a local residence.
False “deputy” — A resident lost $350 to a scam in which a fraudulent caller claimed to be a deputy and demanded double that in payment of “a fine,” threatening an arrest warrant.
Charges made — Last week, Jan. 24 - 30, The Dalles police charged one person with DUII and six with warrants. Hood River police charged on person with disorderly conduct, one with DUII, one with hit and run, one with theft, one with trespass and five with warrants. OSP charged two people with DUII, one with driving while suspended or revoked, one with reckless driving and one with warrants. Wasco County Sheriff does not log its arrests.
Arrests made — From Jan. 13 to Feb. 2, Bingen-White Salmon Police charged on person with assault, one with driving while suspended (DWS), one with trespass, one with a drug violation and two with warrants. From Jan. 26 to Feb. 1, Hood River police charged one person with assault, one with DWS, two with DUII, one with improper use of 911, one with a restraining order violation, one with unlawful possession of firearm and one with a warrant. From Jan. 30 to Feb. 7, The Dalles police made two arrests without logging the charges; charged three people with DUII, one with harassment, one with hit-and-run, one with reckless driving, one with theft, one with trespass, two with a restraining order violation and one with a stalking order violation and six with warrants. Wasco County Sheriff’s Office does not log its arrests, except for one warrant arrest made this week. And OSP arrested one person on DWS, four on DUII, two for eluding, one with hit-and-run, three with reckless driving and one with a warrant.
Bite and run — A dog bit another dog in White Salmon Jan. 13. Officers tried to find the offender. The same agency got two other animal calls that week. The Dalles police logged 10: Dogs at-large, shut in cars and barking annoyingly; two deer wandering by Mt. Hood Street; raccoon hit by car; and a cat with an abscess. Wasco County Sheriff’s Office logged seven animal calls, too.
Death — A death, with ongoing investigation, was logged in White Salmon Jan. 28. Separately, The Dalles police also reported a death.
Dump trailer snatched — Hood River police reported four thefts: a dump trailer, items from two separate vehicles on the same night, and shoplifting. In one incident, officers trespassed a person from Walmart. Several days later, Walmart informed officers the same person had made multiple thefts from their store.
Boots, guns gone — The Dalles police logged six thefts, including: A 9 mm tan handgun with a full clip was stolen from a reporting party who gave the suspect’s name. Separately, “a bunch of firearms” were stolen from a vehicle on W. Sixth overnight Jan. 31. And a pair of boots were shoplifted from a W. Sixth store. And on Feb. 5, a 10th-Street business reported they had caught on video “for two weeks every day taking stuff at midnight.”
Strangulation — Hood River police officers arrested the male aggressor in a domestic disturbance on charges of domestic assault and strangulation.
One of many — A Cook, Washington, resident, was charged by Hood River Police with driving under the influence of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a firearm. They later admitted using methamphetamine.
Vehicle found, owner gone — A vehicle belonging to a missing person out of Klickitat County was located on Nineteenth Street, after sitting there for six months. It was impounded and returned to Goldendale by a Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office detective.
Prowlers take tools — On Feb. 4 in The Dalles, a vehicle on Twelfth was illegally entered and the keyfob and tire pressure gauge taken. Another vehicle on Thirteenth was also prowled. Separately, a work truck was broken into and tools stolen on Thirteenth Feb. 5. And the same day, possibly by the same suspect, tools and other items were broken out of a vehicle on 10th.
Just one — Unusually, The Dalles police received just one (1) mental health call instead of 30-60.
Help wanted — The Dalles made a log for emergency assistance to Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office, regarding someone who unlawfully entered a motor vehicle at knife point and was southbound down Hwy 197 at high rates of speed Feb. 2.
Drug items — A found bag of possible methamphetamine reported on Second Street, The Dalles. Separately, a glass pipe and burnt straw were picked off Kramer Field for destruction. Separately, Wasco County Sheriff’s Office logged four drug-related incidents on Webber Street, Wamic Market Store and Sportsman’s Park.
Crashes everywhere — Wasco County dispatch logged 5 crashes on Browns Creek, Cherry Heights, Wamic Market Road and Mill Creek Road — three of them on Jan. 31. Oregon State Police reported two crashes: A single yellow Subaru Baja sideswiped the median on I-84 Jan. 31, due to low visibility on a wet road. And a silver Chevy pickup lost control on icy Hwy 197 and hit a guardrail near milepost 15.
Log truck thumped — A westbound log truck, driven by its Dallesport owner, had reached milepost 77 on I-84 when a Toyota Tacoma sped up to pass it. The Tacoma fishtailed on the frosty road, hit the log trailer’s tire, hit the median, hit the log trailer again, and nearly smacked back into the median before gaining control. A third driver noticed the Tacoma’s failure to stop, called OSP, and stayed behind the 45-year-old The Dalles resident until a trooper pulled them over in Hood River for a criminal citation.
Officers crash catching three-county speeder — A yellow Dodge Charger, caught going 92 mph in a 70 mph zone on I-84, sped away from the OSP trooper who tried to catch up with it near milepost 61 westbound on Jan. 30. As the trooper started lights and sirens, the vehicle reached speeds of 143 mph and escaped. The trooper did not pursue the suspect, who left the freeway, doubled back in the opposite direction down I-84, then fled from a Wasco County deputy. Hood River deputies and police then pursued it to Hood River, were spikes were successfully used to puncture the tires. At this point an uninvolved commercial vehicle channeled a Ford containing a Hood River police officer into the median; the officer slowed to avoid a collision, and a following Hood River deputy in a Ford F-150 could not slow fast enough to avoid rear-ending their associate. Neither was injured but both got towed. Meanwhile, the suspect driver, 21, was charged with attempt to elude, and with reckless driving in three counties.
Stuck truck — A commercial driver on Hwy 197 tried to back their truck and trailer onto a side road near milepost 23, high-centered in the ditch and got stuck, blocking the southbound lane. ODOT tried, unsuccessfully, to pull them out. A towing company then responded. OSP helped with traffic control until a towing company got the truck unstuck.
0.38% alcohol — A car with a flat tire was speeding around 90 mph on I-84, unable to stay in its lane on Feb. 6. After multiple calls an OSP trooper tried to stop the vehicle, which failed to yield for several miles. Finally, it seemed ready to stop near milepost 62 westbound — then rear-ended a patrol vehicle and kept driving to milepost 76, where troopers finally got it stopped — after it collided with the center divider. The driver’s blood alcohol content was 0.38%, over four times the legal limit; they were arrested on three charges.
Vandal wreck flowers, items — Numerous stores in Hood River were vandalized last week, according to social media posts by owners and media logs. At Mike’s Ice Cream, a vandal stopped by around 5 a.m. and “destroyed all of our flowers, put our belongings out in the street, and turned on the back hose by our trash and pointed it into our public restroom,” Mike’s posted.
