Charges ahead — From March 1 - 31, Hood River Sheriff’s Office charged people with assault (three), charge not logged (four), disorderly conduct (one), DUII (three), harassment (one), reckless driving (one), trespass (one).
Then, from April 6 - 7, Hood River city police charged people with assault (one), DUII (one), driving while suspended (one), drug violation (three), harassment (one), false information (one), theft (one), warrant (two).
And last week, The Dalles police charged people with assault (one), burglary (one), charge not logged (one), disorderly (one), interfering with 911 report (one), menacing (one), no contact order violation (one), theft (two), trespass (one), warrant (seven); Oregon State Police charged people with driving while suspended (three), DUII (two), reckless driving (one).
Injured officer — A vehicle fled a traffic stop on March 16, injuring a Hood River officer, according to county logs. The vehicle was pursued into Multnomah County, where the driver was arrested on charges of Aggravated Assault.
Crag rats for a dog — Hood River deputies joined three search-and-rescues in March. They and Hood River Crag Rats personnel rescued an injured climber from Mount Hood on March 1, at about 7:31 a.m.
On March 5, both organizations responded to a report of a dog gone over a cliff. And on March 21, deputies responded to a hiker with medical issues at Herman Creek Campground.
Twelve thefts — reported by Hood River deputies in March. In one, a vehicle was stolen from Hood River. Another reported a possibly stolen firearm. Meanwhile, The Dalles police took 12 theft reports last week, including vehicle prowls on 16th Place, 14th Street, 7th Street and 11th Street; two bicycles; a vehicle; and three shopliftings.
In traffic — Hood River deputies responded to a report of a person jumping in and out of traffic on I-84 on March 8.
At school — A fight at Hood River Valley High School led to an arrest by county deputies on March 11.
Deaths — Hood River deputies handled three unattended deaths, and a death investigation, in March.
Recovered — A stolen vehicle was recovered by Hood River deputies near Eagle Creek Overlook on March 15. Other stolen items were recovered March 18-19. And a stolen gun was recovered March 27.
Gotcha — Two dogs reportedly chased, and killed, sheep in Hood River County on March 20.
Embezzled — An employee admitted to stealing an undetermined amount of money from their employer over several years on March 20, and a report of embezzlement was taken.
Two injury crashes — Reported by Hood River police. In one, two vehicles crashed at 13th and May streets April 9, and an occupant was transported to the emergency room. The other two-vehicle crash took place on an I-84 off-ramp on April 7. Meanwhile last week, Hood River police reported three crashes and The Dalles one.
Circumstantial evidence — The Dalles made 28 animal calls: Dogs missing, escaped, shut in, dead on the railroad, fighting, getting punched; roaming cats, dead cat, alleged “wolf” or huskey sighting ... One resident complained of raccoons in his kitchen on Snipes; officers found a pawprint — but no raccoon. And an injured dog on I-84 was dispatched by state troopers. Meanwhile, Wasco County got five animal calls.
Phone burglar — A person was arrested in The Dalles April 10 for burglary and theft after allegedly entering a house to take a cellphone.
Fight — A person was arrested in The Dalles on four charges — assault, theft, interfering with making a 911 report, and violating a no-contact order — after a physical altercation with another.
Fraud — The Dalles got three fraud reports: SNAP and credit cards stolen, false check.
A little arson — A small grass fire near 10th Street, The Dalles was put out on April 11, and another on Eighth Street the same day. The second fire started at Bonneville Power’s substation, but affected only the grass and fence. The same suspect was thought to have started both fires. Later that week, a The Dalles person was charged with second-degree arson.
Four — mental health calls in The Dalles last week.
Hit and run — Someone was injured in a hit-and-run crash on I-84 April 13. A Dodge Caravan rear-ended a Dodge Ram twice, injuring the driver, and continued westbound without stopping. The rear-ended vehicle followed it until a trooper stopped it.
Two injury crashes — Reported by Oregon State Police last week. One person got minor injuries on I-84 in Sherman County April 14, after leaving their lane. The driver said they fell asleep. Separately, a driver was moving his stuff down I-84 to a new home, when a plastic tote of Christmas decorations fell into the lane. A Volkswagon swerved to avoid it. A Toyota, moving to avoid the Volkswagon, rear-ended it before “pin-balling” back and forth into the median. All three occupants complained of pain.
Too many turkeys — A hunter self-reported killing a turkey one day before the season opened on April 14. Another hunter was caught carrying two turkeys and cited for killing more than one a day. OSP donated both birds to food banks.
The one that got away — A car fled down I-84 at speeds of over 100 mph after a state trooper tried to stop it for speeding on April 16. The car sped recklessly into Cascade Locks, witnessed by ODOT workers and the fire chief, and the trooper later found it empty — except for some drugs and drug paraphernalia. Both occupants were felony suspended. Only the passenger was located.
Drugs — An overdose was reported at Memaloose Rest Area last week. State troopers administered narcan before medics arrived and transported the person to an area hospital. The Dalles police reported a separate overdose and Wasco deputies another drug incident.
