(The Center Square) — President Donald Trump announced he would nominate Heidi Overton to serve as the new Food and Drug Administration Commissioner.Â
Overton is the deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council and has worked on various health initiatives within Trump's administration.Â
"She is known to take on the HARDEST issues, and bring me solutions that work best for the Country," Trump wrote on social media.Â
Overton, a medical doctor, got her degree from the University of New Mexico and Johns Hopkins University, according to a social media profile and comments from President Trump.Â
"Dr. Heidi will work with Secretary Kennedy and Dr. Oz to RAPIDLY deliver on my priorities of FASTER Cures, INCREASED American Innovation, MAJOR Clinical Trial Reforms, LOWER Drug Prices, and even more MAHA WINS!" Trump wrote.Â
If confirmed, Overton would take over the FDA post from Marty Makary, who resigned in May. Overton would take a vast array of new priorities for the FDA, including scaling back access to abortion drugs.Â
"She will make our food supply safer, modernize drug approvals, unleash American medical innovation, accelerate access to lifesaving treatments, bring greater transparency and accountability to the agency, and restore Gold Standard Science as the foundation of every decision," Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said.Â
Overton will need to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate in order to move forward in leading the agency.Â
