Tourism data published in July confirms the broader seasonal change is already measurable. International arrivals across Europe grew 5% year-to-date compared to the same period in 2025, and overnight stays climbed 4.8%. Nearly 80% of reporting destinations recorded increases. The growth is broad, but what stands out is where it’s concentrating in the calendar. Travelers are choosing their timing intentionally, with affordability, safety and value influencing when and where people go.
Climate and booking data redraw the fall travel map
Recent summers of extreme heat across southern Europe have factored into how travelers plan their trips. In a global advisor survey, 45% of respondents say climate change is causing their clients to travel differently. Of that group, 76% say their clients are choosing shoulder season or off-peak periods instead. Fall isn’t the consolation for travelers who missed the summer window. For a growing share of Americans, it’s the plan.
Daytrip, a private travel service that connects travelers with English-speaking local drivers for door-to-door rides between cities, has released the European destinations its primarily American customers are booking most for fall 2026. The company operates in more than 130 countries and specializes in private city-to-city transfers that can include sightseeing stops along the way, turning what would otherwise be a transfer into part of the trip. Its fall booking data offers a particularly interesting snapshot of where American travelers are heading once Europe moves beyond its summer season. Several destinations on the list stand out because they become fundamentally different places once summer ends.
Fall foliage reframes Croatia’s most visited national park
Plitvice Lakes is a different park in October than it is in July. The 16 cascading lakes sit inside forests of beech, maple and birch that change color as fall arrives, with autumn foliage typically emerging in late September and peaking around mid-October, though conditions vary by year.
Summer draws the largest crowds to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed since 1979. In fall, the boardwalks and hiking paths open up, and the waterfalls that define the park have the autumn canopy as a backdrop instead of a wall of visitors.
A Bohemian river town uncorks its wine season in October
Český Krumlov, a medieval South Bohemian town, sits inside a bend of the Vltava River, its castle and historic center recognized by UNESCO in 1992 for their exceptional preservation. By early October, the summer crowds that pack the narrow streets will thin out considerably.
The town leans into the season with its own Wine Festival running through October and November, building toward St. Martin’s Day celebrations when winemakers across the Czech Republic open the year’s first bottles. Fall foliage lines the river corridor and fills the castle gardens, and the low-angled autumn light gives the town’s baroque rooftops a quality that summer sun doesn’t replicate.
Grape harvest takes over a Tuscan hilltop town
September and October bring vendemmia to Tuscany, the annual grape harvest that turns the region’s hillsides from green to amber. Montepulciano sits at the center of Vino Nobile production, a hilltop town overlooking the Val d’Orcia UNESCO landscape. Wineries open for tastings and cantine aperte events during fall, and the surrounding countryside is at its most photogenic as vineyards and olive groves turn color. Fall is when the town’s connection to the harvest calendar is most visible.
Portugal’s quiet beach town becomes a big-wave stage
October turns Nazaré into one of the Atlantic’s most powerful surf stages. The big-wave season runs from October through March, powered by the Nazaré Canyon, Europe’s largest underwater canyon, which funnels deep-ocean swells toward Praia do Norte and produces some of the tallest surfable waves on the planet. Outside the big-wave season, the same coastline is better known for its beach culture and swimming.

Each one offers something in October that doesn’t exist in July, and the travelers choosing them know that. September bookings are rising strongly across Europe, and among advisors whose clients are adjusting plans because of climate change, most say those clients are choosing off-peak travel.
